
You are sitting near a sunny window, arms exposed, and you notice a slight discoloration on your skin after a few days. The sun filtering through the glass seems to have an effect, but not like when you are outside. This difference is due to the nature of ultraviolet rays and what the glazing actually filters.
Windshield and side windows: two very different UV filters
Competitors rarely address this distinction, yet it changes the entire understanding of the topic. In a car, the windshield and side windows are not made from the same type of glass.
The windshield is laminated glass with an interlayer of plastic. This layer blocks almost all UV rays, including UVA. The skin on your face, behind this glazing, receives very little ultraviolet radiation.
The side windows, on the other hand, are made of tempered glass. This glass stops UVB (the rays that cause classic sunburn), but lets through a significant portion of UVA. The concrete result: the arm resting near the door can undergo slow pigmentation and accelerated skin aging, while the face remains relatively protected by the windshield.
If you are a truck driver, salesperson, or spend several hours a day behind the wheel, this asymmetrical exposure can accumulate over months. You can even tan behind a side window without ever feeling a burn, making the phenomenon particularly insidious.

UVA and UVB through a standard window: what glass really lets through
To understand the mechanism, it is necessary to distinguish between two families of ultraviolet rays that reach the skin.
- UVB is blocked by ordinary glass. These are the rays that trigger visible sunburn and stimulate vitamin D production. Behind a window, your skin produces almost no vitamin D.
- UVA pass through standard glass in varying amounts. They penetrate deeper into the dermis, degrade collagen, and cause a slow tan, less visible but real.
- Laminated glass (windshield, some high-end sliding doors) also stops the majority of UVA. Simple tempered glass, used for most car windows and side windows, allows a significant fraction of UVA to pass through.
Tanning behind a window is therefore possible, but it occurs almost exclusively through the action of UVA. It is a slower tan, often uneven, and especially accompanied by skin aging that the skin does not signal with redness.

A conservatory with single glazing or standard double glazing transmits some UVA. Spending an entire afternoon under a sunny conservatory exposes the skin, even if the sensation of heat is mitigated by the glass.
The absence of a burning sensation does not mean the absence of damage. UVA do not cause immediate sunburn, but their cumulative effect contributes to photoaging and the risk of skin lesions in the long term.
Office near a window
Working all day next to a south or west-facing window exposes the side of the face and hands to UVA. Over a full year, this dose is not negligible. Anti-UV films are available for home and office windows, providing a simple additional layer of protection.

Sun protection behind a window: when to really take action
Applying sunscreen for a ten-minute drive in the car is not very useful. However, certain situations warrant active protection.
- Prolonged driving (more than an hour a day, regularly): sunscreen on the hands and forearms exposed to the window reduces UVA damage.
- Working in a conservatory or near a sliding door for several hours a day: an anti-UV film on the glazing protects better than cream, as it acts continuously without reapplication.
- Sensitive skin or a history of skin lesions: caution is necessary even behind glass, as UVA act without a perceptible warning signal.
The tinted windows of some high-end vehicles filter more UVA than standard tempered glass, but they do not block them completely. Only laminated glass offers near-total filtering for the entire UV spectrum.
The short answer to the initial question: yes, you can tan behind a window, but this tanning occurs exclusively through UVA, without vitamin D production and without a skin alert signal. The type of glazing makes all the difference between anecdotal exposure and a real cumulative risk for the skin.
